The Morning Sea

Music should evoke emotion and feeling.  It inspires us and connects with certain memories, experiences, and visions.  Well at least for me.  And I truly love any music that gives me inspiration.  If the name The Morning Sea isn't already a starting point for a wonderful visual to depict, then just take in the sounds of the group's album Mal de Mar.

Listening to various songs brings out different emotions and visions for me.  Overall, I imagine going on a road trip with friends singing along together to every track reminiscing about life.  I also think about what the background music would be to a life changing experience that ultimately helped me grow and become a better person somehow.  The lyrics assist in this visual journey.  Particular lyrics also stick out to me, when listening to Alexandra I love the lyrics, "Colors run beneath the surface of our skin".  Watch the the video below to get a taste.

I also can't help but to appreciate this band's knowledge and passion for music.  You can clearly hear references of new and old sounds meshed well together in the ultimate hyper blend sound the band likes to describe as "Gotham Americana".  I think this description fits perfectly.  As you listen through the album you can pull out various musical instruments and styles.  And what I love most is their use of horns, piano, and string instruments; and how harmoniously they're used to blend alternative rock vibes with an eerie and haunting sound.  Which I believe is what they're going for in "Gotham Americana".

They still give a slight nod to an indie/folk songwriter feel with the lyrics and song compositions.  But I also hear classic rock sounds like those of David Bowie's experimental sounds in the 70s (i.e. Space Oddity), or the alternative rock movement in the 90s led by bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers who drew from funk influences.  The horns and strings bring in an extra orchestral quality to their sound I find to be melodically soothing.  The layering of choral harmonizing vocals and soulful guitar chords are what I love most about The Cold and the Quiet.  Take a listen.

Overall I highly suggest this group if you're looking for bands and artists creating quality music.  Artists that continue to push the boundaries of not being defined by genres and fitting into a particular mold.  You can tell these are musicians who make music because they have to.  It's what they love, what they breathe, and is their ultimate art form of expression.  By the way they also produced and wrote the album.  So they're pretty awesome I say!
